for whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved

2 Peter 2:19-20 (ESV)

19 They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

Addiction of any kind is an all too easy trap to find ourselves in.

Whether it’s food, drink, or drugs. Or perhaps it’s the Internet, TV, or pornography.

Whatever it is, it grabs a hold of us like a parasite and doesn’t let go.

It drains us and overcomes us to the point where we are now a slave to our desires.

We are unable to break free from the chains of slavery either because we are ignorant of our dilemma or, as master, the addiction has complete power over us.

And as such, it is a clear warning to believers, much like the “thorns” that “choke” in the Parable of the Sower (Mark 4:1ff) and the “sin which so easily entangles us” (Hebrews 12:1, NIV).

prayer : help me to be “disciplined” (Hebrews 12:3ff)

action : recognise those areas of my life that are, or could potentially be, a form of addiction

hello world!

I’ve been thinking lately that I would like to start another blog that reflects the spiritual side of my life.

I’m a Christian and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

But my other blogs are about different journeys.

The first chronicles my experience of living overseas, captured specifically through travel photography.

And the second is about my endeavours to shed quite a few kg and in the process become both physically fit and healthy, called 100days100ways.

There are, of course, overlaps. How could there not be.

But I don’t want to feel like I’m preaching on the other two blogs when they were set-up for completely secular pursuits.

So this here is my opportunity to create a journal that captures my Bible readings, thoughts, prayers, love of Christian music and more.
