sell your possessions, and give to the needy

Luke 12:33-34 (ESV)

33 “Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Now if there was ever a challenge for the wealthy and prosperous it has to be this command.

Of course the context is Jesus telling those listening to put their faith into action. To display a trust in God so radical that they would be willing to give everything away (cf. Matthew 13:45-46).

Do we hold onto our possessions like they’re a lifeline? As if they will provide us security from the uncertainty of life?

Could we walk away from it all?

“Treasuring” not our creature comforts but the assurance of eternal life?

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” (Psalms 56:3-4)

prayer : help me to not cling on to my worldly possessions

action : give generously to those in need
