‘”You shall not commit adultery.”‘ Exodus 20:14 (ESV)
Once upon a time adultery was considered a crime. And in God’s eyes it still is.
Whether it is sleeping with someone other than your spouse when you’re married or sleeping with someone before you’re married it’s still adultery.
Yet I think we fail to realise that we all commit adultery.
How?
By not loving God with our whole heart, mind, soul and strength.
We humans are weak. And we fail to be the perfect bride for Christ.
Our hearts often pursue things other than God: wealth, family, work, fitness, pleasure, possessions. The list is endless.
And so, like the wife of Hosea, we prostitute ourselves. Sleeping with others like we’re a harlot.
Yet God is patient. And kind. And merciful. And full-of-grace.
Forgiving our sins time and time again.
It is in Christ we find perfection. Whilst we may strive to be sinless we need to admit to ourselves that this is impossible and that righteousness can only come through the risen Lord (Philippians 1:11).
